April 24, 2015: An Irish Member of Parliament and a Fine Gael politician Brian Hayes commenting on European Commission's recent crackdown on Google says that European Union should not use its Digital Single Market proposal to target large US tech firms for "political means."
Mr Hayes pointed that commission's recent decision to start a formal investigation against Google for allegedly abusing its dominant position for online searches, "I think there does need to be a full and frank investigation into allegations of market abuse since we need a level playing field for all search engine providers."
The commission will publish its Digital Single Market strategy on May 6th, which will aims to provide better access for enterprises and consumers to online goods and services across Europe. The report will propose possible reforms in areas such as copyright, contract law, IT infrastructure, corporation tax, parcel delivery services, VAT, broadband services and telecom services.
The proposals are in a bid to make Europe tech firms strong enough to cut down the growing dominance of US tech giants.
Major tech companies like linkedin, Google, Apple, Twitter are leading investors in Ireland, with thousands of employees between them at their European headquarters in Ireland.
"We need a Digital Single Market as it will break barriers for the efficient delivery of e-services to all European consumers. But this should not be about the commission going after large tech companies because of ther dominance in the market," Mr Hayes said.
The much needed support from a Dublin member of parliament after serious rounds of allegation against Google will shows a positive political will of Ireland for global tech companies, and it will certainly bring more investment in the region.
