April 26, 2015: The recent Earthquake in Nepal has caused huge loss of lives, over 2400 people has been killed till now and hundreds are missing. It's been a tough job for local government authorities to clear the dusty roads, and to manage the huge relief work caused by the unfortunate disaster. To extend the hand of support, the tech giants Google and Facebook has came up with their tools which can help people find their loved ones and can help people know about their safety with the app.
Facebook's Safety check feature ask users in an area affected by disaster or tragedy if they are safe. And contacts can find how many friends from their list are in affected area and how many of them are safe. The company's chief reminded people about the feature in his post saying "When disaster happens, people need to know their loved ones are safe," he further adds, "It's moments like this that being able to connect really matters."
Released in 2010, Google has a similar tool called PersonFinder, it's a database of missing persons which helps people reconnect with friends and family in the aftermath of natural and humanitarian disaster. Whether you are looking for someone or have information about someone, this tool can help you report and find.
In this hour of human grief, help from any source must be acknowledged and appreciated. And despite all shortcomings, we must say that the efforts by this giants reaffirm our faith in technology.
